When I recorded my first album, I set out to make it under the same conditions any folk artist working in the 50s would. I had to play it all live, and any post-processing or splicing of bad takes were minimal.

Obviously, my second album abandoned those constraints and I got weird with it. I want to push in those directions again at some point, but the other day I was sitting around and I wanted to try something a little different.

Modern technology is the only thing that ever gave me the chance to make music and spread it to the world, but it leads me towards a tendency for perfectionism. Because it's trivial to sand off rough edges and endlessly tweak, well… why shouldn't I? My last few creative projects (as well as a current one) have been a lot of re-takes and fiddling and mixing.

For this album, I decided to scale it back to a spontaneous burst: one morning, one take, one microphone. I didn't even plan the track list, just played what I felt on the day.

It's raw, but I think there's something that, in the end, feels intimate about it. Part of me doesn't want to release it. I can hear the guitar flubs, places where I don't get the vocal note or word entirely right… but at the end of the day, not everything needs to be perfect.

So when you listen to this, put yourself in the mental space of stumbling upon a living room concert just for you... and my cats. They were hanging out while I recorded this, too. You may even hear them in the background if you listen really close.

I hope you enjoy it.
